Why am I having foot pain?

Foot pain happens for various reasons, including trauma, overuse, and arthritis. Each of your feet has 26 bones, 33 joints, and dozens of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These tissues support the weight of your body, letting you stand, walk, and run.

Because the feet experience daily wear-and-tear, it’s normal to have foot pain occasionally. If you experience foot pain that continues for days or even weeks, identifying the cause is crucial.

Are there different types of foot pain?

At Feet First Institute of Beavercreek, Dr. Giambi treats several types of foot pain, including:

Heel pain

Heel pain occurs at the back of your foot, on or around your heel bone. Common causes of heel pain include bone spurs, Achilles tendinitis, and arthritis.

Ankle pain

The ankle is one of the most mobile body parts; it has seven bones and three joints that help you walk, run, and pivot. Common causes of ankle pain include ankle sprains, ankle instability, and ankle fractures.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is an overuse injury that causes intense heel and arch pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia –– a thick band of tissue that runs from the toes to the heel –– gets injured because of an abnormal gait (walking pattern) or overuse.

How is foot pain diagnosed?

Dr. Giambi reviews your medical records and asks about your pain, including when it started, where it is, and if certain activities, for example, exercising, make it worse.

Next, he completes a podiatry exam, checking your feet for bruising and swelling and gently pressing on them to identify sensitive spots. Dr. Giambi also orders diagnostic imaging, like X-rays or an MRI, to check for broken bones and soft tissue damage.

How is foot pain treated?

At Feet First Institute of Beavercreek, Dr. Giambi uses a conservative and integrative approach to treat foot pain. He could suggest:

  • Custom orthotics (prescription shoe inserts)
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
  • Physical therapy
  • Casts or splints (if you have a broken bone)
  • Removal of corns, calluses, or plantar warts

Some types of foot pain benefit from surgery. Dr. Giambi offers traditional open and minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery.
