What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Platelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP, is an outpatient procedure that promotes recovery. It uses growth factors in your blood (platelets) to reduce inflammation, increase circulation, and spur the production of new, healthy cells and tissue.

Because PRP uses your blood, there’s no risk of infection or other complications. A series of PRP treatments can relieve pain and help you return to your favorite activities quickly.

What types of foot and ankle problems can benefit from PRP?

At Feet First Institute of Beavercreek, Dr. Giambi uses PRP to treat various foot and ankle problems, including:

  • Bunions
  • Foot pain
  • Diabetic ulcers and other slow-healing wounds
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Ankle instability
  • Foot and ankle fractures (broken bones)
  • Heel spurs
  • Morton’s neuroma

Sometimes, Dr. Giambi administers PRP after foot or ankle surgery. That reduces the risk of infection and speeds up your body’s healing process.

What does PRP involve?

PRP is an outpatient procedure that averages 60-90 minutes.

If Dr. Giambi determines you’re a candidate for PRP, he draws blood from a vein in your arm. Afterward, he puts your blood sample in a centrifuge –– a machine that spins rapidly, separating the platelets (growth factors) from the rest of your blood.

Once the platelet-rich plasma solution is ready, Dr. Giambi uses a syringe to inject the PRP into strategic areas of your feet and/or ankles. For example, if you have plantar fasciitis, Dr. Giambi injects the PRP into the bottom and sides of your heel.

After the PRP enters your body, it increases circulation to the treatment site. That reduces inflammation, relieves pain, and triggers the production of new, healthy tissue.

How many PRP treatments will I need?

The number of PRP treatments you need depends on the foot or ankle problem treated and the severity of your symptoms. Some people experience significant pain relief after a single PRP session,* but Dr. Giambi typically recommends a series of treatments.

The results of PRP therapy are cumulative, meaning the benefits add up over time.

Dr. Giambi monitors your recovery at regular checkups and adjusts your care plan as needed.
